Bauerlein made some really good arguments, and I do not entirely believe that we are the dumbest generation. Someone in class pointed out that every generation thinks the one after them is the dumbest. If you were to give my parents the quiz you gave me today, they would probably score even lower than I did. It is not that we are dumb; we are adapted to what we need to know. If an adult does not know how to use a cell phone, some of the people in today’s society might call them dumb.
I also really did not like how he was stereotyping us all. I don’t know how everyone else is, but I know that schoolwork is dominating my brain almost all day every day. Usually, I am so stressed from my school work that I have regular headaches.
During the “Jaywalking” video we were shown, I am fairly sure I did not know only one of the questions that were asked. Also, if I’m not mistaken, many of the people in that video were from the generation before. I find that interesting seeing as though Bauerlein is being so hostile toward our lack of knowledge. He did make another good point though that students want to learn. We want someone to be our mentor and to kick our asses in to shape.
I'm gonna work my hardest to "kick your asses into shape" :)
ReplyDeleteI like that you said that 'we have adapted to what we need to know.' Different time periods require different knowledge bases. I think there is just a misunderstanding between those generations, and that is a big reason why the older generations think that the younger ones are terrible.
ReplyDeleteI never said I wanted to have my ass kicked into shape.... why not some supportive and inspirational role models? I guess they are harder to come by.
I agree that school work is always on my mind! I get pimples for it. When im not doing school work, I have to work and when im working I worry about doing my school work. I don't think were all lazy. And I agree with Brooke, supportive and inspirational role models are hard to come by today!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that we have a lot of work and i get headaches all the time too from it! I feel as if we have so much information to retain that sometimes we can't keep up with it all. That does not mean we are "dumb" because i bet the other generations before us did not cover as much material as we do in collge now. Like you said we adapt to the new things and are getting critisized for it.
